Electrical Engineering Design

Service sizing, panel schedules, one-line diagrams, lighting and controls, fire alarm, generators and EV charging.

Electrical design decides whether the utility service is adequate, whether the panels fit the room the architect gave them, and whether the inspector signs off the first time. Our electrical engineers work on the same drawings as our mechanical and plumbing teams, so motor loads, kitchen equipment, water heaters and EV chargers are counted once and counted correctly.

What we design

  • Power distribution: utility service entrance, switchboards and panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and the one-line diagram that ties it together.
  • Lighting and controls: interior and exterior lighting, photometrics, occupancy and daylight controls, and emergency and egress lighting.
  • Fire alarm and life safety: initiating and notification devices, control panel, monitoring and interfaces with suppression and HVAC.
  • Standby and emergency power: generator sizing, transfer switches, load shedding and separation of emergency, legally required and optional standby loads.
  • Electrification and metering: EV charging infrastructure, solar interconnection, heat pump loads and sub-metering for tenants.
  • Low voltage: telecom and data pathways, security and access control rough-ins, and coordination with the owner’s vendors.

How we approach it

  1. Loads first. We tabulate every piece of equipment from the mechanical, plumbing, kitchen and owner schedules, run the Article 220 calculation and confirm the utility service early, because a new service is usually the longest lead item on the project.
  2. Rooms and routes. Electrical rooms, panel locations and conduit routes are settled with the architect before the plans are detailed, so clearances and working space per NEC 110.26 are built in.
  3. Permit set. Plans, schedules, one-line, details, lighting compliance forms and specifications, sealed in the project state.
  4. Construction support. Submittal review, RFI responses and field changes documented in the as-built set.

Franchise and multi-site work

For brands rolling out multiple locations we maintain a prototype electrical package and adapt it per site: utility service type, local amendments to the NEC, and the equipment package the brand specifies. That keeps each permit set consistent and fast.

Frequently asked questions

Can you provide the electrical load letter the utility is asking for?

Yes. We calculate the connected and demand load per NEC Article 220, prepare the load letter on our letterhead with the PE seal, and coordinate the service request with the utility. It is one of our Quick Services.

Do you design the fire alarm system or only coordinate it?

We design it. Device layouts, riser diagram, sequence of operations and the interface with sprinkler flow switches, kitchen suppression and HVAC shutdown are part of the electrical permit set when fire alarm is in scope.

Do you include lighting design?

Yes. We lay out fixtures, run photometric calculations where the jurisdiction or the owner needs them, select controls that meet the energy code, and prepare the lighting compliance form.

Can you handle EV chargers and rooftop solar?

Yes. We size the service and feeders for the chargers, design the branch circuits and load management, and prepare the interconnection drawings for solar systems in coordination with the installer.

Have a project in design or permitting?

Send us the drawings you have, even if they are early. We reply within one business day with scope, fee and schedule.
