Fire Protection Engineering Design
Sprinkler and standpipe design, hydraulic calculations, fire pumps, fire alarm and kitchen suppression coordination.
Fire protection is where the plan examiner looks hardest, and where a missing hydraulic calculation or an unclassified storage area can hold up a permit for weeks. We provide the sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump and fire alarm design needed for the permit, coordinated with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings produced by the same team.
What we design
- Sprinkler systems for new buildings, tenant fit-outs and changes of use: wet, dry and pre-action systems, hazard classifications, design areas and densities, and the water supply to support them.
- Standpipes and fire pumps for mid-rise and high-rise buildings and large footprints.
- Fire alarm systems and their interfaces with sprinklers, elevators, HVAC shutdown and kitchen suppression.
- Special hazards: commercial kitchen suppression, storage occupancies, and clean agent systems for IT and electrical rooms.
How we approach it
- Code analysis. We confirm the occupancy, construction type, building height and area, and the sprinkler and alarm requirements with the architect’s code summary.
- Water supply. Hydrant flow test, backflow and fire service entrance sized for the demand.
- Design and calculations. Layouts, risers, hydraulic calculations and the fire protection narrative the jurisdiction expects.
- Shop drawings and inspections. We review the contractor’s shop drawings and calculations and support the acceptance tests.

Learn moreFrequently asked questions
Does the engineer design the sprinkler system or does the sprinkler contractor?
It depends on the jurisdiction and the project. Many authorities accept performance drawings from the engineer with full shop drawings by the contractor. Where the permit requires engineered sprinkler drawings and hydraulic calculations, we provide them.
Do you need a hydrant flow test?
Yes for hydraulically designed systems. We request the test from the water purveyor or arrange it, then base the calculations on the measured static and residual pressures.
Can you handle warehouse storage sprinkler design?
Yes. Storage height, commodity class and rack configuration drive the design, and we document the assumptions so the owner understands what the system is rated for.
Do you coordinate the kitchen hood suppression system?
Yes. The suppression system is typically furnished by the hood vendor. We specify it, show the interlocks with the exhaust fan, makeup air, gas valve and fire alarm, and confirm the installation meets NFPA 96 and 17A.
